#SLS ~ Astronomy

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. I just read a post on Jim’s site about “Lids”… an old term for an amount of marijuana, weed, or cannabis. It made me laugh because I was very, very high when I saw the band that plays the song I chose. Probably most times I listened to the album too.

The prompt words this week (suggested by me) – Heavenly Bodies, Planets, Moon, Sun, Stars

With a list of at least a dozen songs just off the top of my head I knew I was in trouble. Then I remembered Planet Caravan by Black Sabbath. It’s from their 1970 classic Paranoid. I don’t think the song got radio play, not with War Pigs, Iron Man, and Parnoid from the same album, but I love it! It’s very different from the usual Black Sabbath music, very mellow and kinda jazzy.

I saw Black Sabbath April 9, 1982. Ozzy wasn’t singing with them anymore, they had Ronnie James Dio as their singer. Great show! They didn’t play Planet Caravan though.

Wiki tells us – Black Sabbath’s Geezer Butler – who composed the song’s lyrics – said the song is about floating through the universe with one’s lover. Black Sabbath lead vocalist Ozzy Osbourne uses a Leslie speaker to achieve the vocals’ treble and vibration effects. The piano parts on the track were played by album engineer Tom Allom. Iommi overdubbed flute to the reversed multitrack master which was then re-forwarded and treated with stereo delay.

On 31 May 2020, “Planet Caravan” was selected by SpaceX as the wake-up music for the crew of a SpaceX Crew Dragon prior to the craft’s launch later that day. It represented the first time astronauts have received a musical wake-up since the final shuttle mission in July 2011. The craft was bound for the International Space Station.

We sail through endless skies
Stars shine like eyes
The black night sighs
The Moon in silver dreams
Falls down in beams
Light of the night
The Earth a purple blaze
Of sapphire haze
In orbit always

While down below the trees
Bathed in cool breeze
Silver starlight breaks
Dawn from night
And so we pass on by
The crimson eye
Of great god Mars
As we travel the universe

Life at the Casa continues to be rough. I had a few days where I was stuck in melancholia, but that could’ve been the cloudy, rainy weather. Yes, rain. I know, crazy, right?! We had a thunder and lightning storm too. I have proof! I took a bazillion pictures cuz it happened at sunset, and I caught the lightning in one picture. There’s even a bit of rainbow next to the lightning. I made a video of all the pictures… it’s here if you’re interested.

Anyway, I’m still trying to get some sleep, still dealing with nonsense, and still lurking while I try to form some kind of routine. And I mean routine in the loosest possible meaning of the word. I hope all is well with all of you, and I’ll see you next Sunday, or hopefully sooner.

What song would you choose for this prompt? Are you a Black Sabbath fan? What do you think of this song? Thanks for stopping by!

HUGS!
