#SLS ~ Zero Calorie Sweets

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. I thought since Jim was kind enough to use my prompt suggestion, I’d better make the extra effort this week. I’ve been mostly absent from WP for nearly a month now. Life at the Casa has been more Cuckoo and I’m too exhausted to do more than check in here and there. I seem to be in “Spoon” debt, and may have to file “Spoon Bankruptcy” and reorganize. Anywho… let’s get on with the Music!

The prompt words this week – Sweet, Honey, Sugar, Candy, Chocolate

I went with the song that inspired the suggested prompt words. Lips Like Sugar by Echo & The Bunnymen, from their 1987 self-titled record. The song never charted in the US, but it reached #36 in the UK.

Writing credit for Lips Like Sugar goes to all four band members. They were originally three guys from Liverpool with a drum machine, until Pete joined the band.

IAN STEPHEN MCCULLOCH (vocals)
LESLIE THOMAS PATTINSON (bass)
PETE DE FREITAS(drums)
WILLIAM SERGEANT(guitar)

Lips Like Sugar has become their best known and liked song in the US, but it wasn’t a favorite of singer, Ian’s. Per Songfacts, the song is one of many UK hits for the band, and one lead singer Ian McCulloch would rather skip. “It was an OK song, I suppose, but it didn’t sound like us,” he told Q magazine in 1992. “We just got sucked into a new mentality on that last album, the sound of Radio America.”

I wouldn’t call myself a huge fan, but I like their music well enough. This song tends to pull up a chair and stay awhile, so you’ve been warned.

She floats like a swan
Grace on the water
Lips like sugar
Lips like sugar
Just when you think you’ve caught her
She glides across the water
She calls for you tonight
To share this moonlight

You’ll flow down her river
She’ll ask and you’ll give her
Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses
Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses

She knows what she knows
I know what she’s thinking
Sugar kisses
Sugar kisses
Just when you think she’s yours
She’s flown to other shores
To laugh at how you break
And melt into this lake

You’ll flow down her river
But you’ll never give her
Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses
Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses

She’ll be my mirror
Reflect what I am
A loser and a winner
The King of Siam
And my Siamese twin
Alone on the river
Mirror kisses
Mirror kisses

Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses
Lips like sugar
Sugar kisses
