#SLS ~ Radio Spirit

Thanks to Jim Adams, for hosting Song Lyric Sunday. In Casa Cuckoo news, I am continuing to rest and heal. Daughter went back to work Thor’sDay night. She actually got her preferred schedule of Thur, Fri, Sat nights for the rest of June. It means I only have to put Ben on the GLYSB on FriedDay mornings, and the consistent schedule will definitely help. I see my Primary Care doctor on Wren’sDay 15th for follow-up. So all is going in the right direction Healthwise. I still need to get my car fixed. The duct tape holding the bumpers on needs to be reapplied after a warm day, and it’s been getting warmer in my corner of SoCal. Luckily I don’t drive often or far. Sven seems to be in his Wonky Summer Brumation, so he’s hiding in his house, occasionally opening one eye to glare at me. Now, let’s get back to the Music, the reason we’re here.

The prompt words this week – Excitement, Pleasure, Sentiment, Spirit

I thought about using a few other songs, but chose The Spirit Of Radio by Rush because I just really like the song. Rush is a band I never got to see in concert, which kinda bums me out.

The Spirit Of Radio is from their 1980 album Permanent Waves. The song only reached #51 in US, but in UK it was #13. Writing credit goes to all three members, singer, bassist, keyboardist Geddy Lee, lead guitarist Alex Lifeson, and drummer Neil Peart. Peart wrote most of the lyrics for their songs.

Songfacts tells us that in the last verse, the line “The words of the profits are written on the studio wall” is a play on words. Rush drummer and lyricist Neil Peart wrote it as “profits” rather than “prophets” to expose the money-grubbing side of the music industry. The lyrics were included in the album and the CD.

There is actually a LOT of cool info about the three members of the band on Songfacts, but I’ll spare you the copy pasta… you’re welcome. I will add one bit of trivia that Jeff pointed out to me regarding a couple (few) of the bands I’ve chosen… Alex first met Geddy in a history class at Fisherville Junior High. That would be in Ontario, Canada.

Begin the day with a friendly voice
A companion unobtrusive
Plays that song that’s so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood

Off on your way, hit the open road
There is magic at your fingers
For the Spirit ever lingers
Undemanding contact in your happy solitude

Invisible airwaves crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle with the energy
Emotional feedback on timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free

All this machinery making modern music
Can still be open-hearted
Not so coldly charted
It’s really just a question of your honesty, yeah
Your honesty
One likes to believe in the freedom of music
But glittering prizes and endless compromises
Shatter the illusion of integrity

Invisible airwaves crackle with life
Bright antennae bristle with the energy
Emotional feedback on timeless wavelength
Bearing a gift beyond price, almost free

For the words of the profits were written on the studio wall
Concert hall
And echoes with the sound of salesmen…of salesmen…of salesmen.
