#StopTheShock

I can’t believe this is STILL happening. The Judge Rosenberg Center is still torturing people because the FDA is dragging their feet. This has to stop!

a diary of a mom

I wrote the following in January of 2015. Even then, the battle was far from new. Autistic people and those who love them have been fighting to end this desperately inhumane form of torture for YEARS.

Please, please get involved. At the end of the post, you will find quick, concrete ways to make your voice heard. Even if you can’t bear to read the bulk of the post, I understand, but please don’t ignore it. This can’t be who we are.

What you are about to read and watch and hear will be extremely difficult to process. It’s horrifying. I’m asking you to read it anyway.

  1. Gosh, I had no idea it was used so widely. I had a client once that suffered from – well a lot of things. I believe her primary diangosis was schizoaffective disorder. But when she got depressed – it was the worst depression I had and have ever seen. She became catatonic. There was no movement of body or face. And there was only so long you could let her go this way – she didn’t eat and she wasn’t getting up to use the bathroom either. She just laid there like a statue. The only thing that helped her was ECT treatments – she was thankful for them. Said they “woke her up.” I thought catatonic depression was the only thing ECT was used for. That article blew my mind.

    1. I know of people who have had ECT and they swear by it. That was a consented, informed choice.
What’s happening at JRC is torture. I really thought it had ended with the trial so I was shocked by this too. We don’t even do ABA, this is so far beyond…makes me angry and breaks my heart.

  2. I can’t believe it either. I would have thought because of the hoo-hah about this years ago that they would have stopped that now. But it seems they haven’t. Isn’t there a way of bringing criminal proceedings against these people? But of course I don’t know enough about the American justice system.

    1. One mother did file a case against the JRC, that’s her son in the film. It was settled. The FDA (food & drug administration) has a said these shocks go too far and are no longer “approved” but the head of FDA (appointed by the president) isn’t enforcing the rule. Our government has gotten really good at not doing what they’re supposed to do.
Boy, oh boy…that’s another can of worms!!

    1. I completely agree! I remember when the media was doing a lot of coverage of the trial and after I just figured it was over. I was flabbergasted when I read Diary Of A Mom’s post and found out it is still happening because of bureaucratic B.S.
If someone tried to do something like this to Ben, I’m sure I’d wind up in jail for damaging property and damaging people.
